Valedor: A Unique Cocktail Bar where Mexico meets Japan

Many thanks for the recommendation of a good friend and Chicago Local who really enjoys trying some of the best places in town.

Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s hip Wicker Park neighborhood, Valedor isn’t just another Cocktail Bar. This concept blends traditional speakeasy style with the feeling of a modern Tokyo bar, designed to delight your eyes as much as your palate.

Atmosphere

Walking into Valedor past its ornamented doors and no windows is like walking into a Chicago Speakeasy that transports you into a classic but modern bar with a massive screen playing only art behind its bar.  The décor is a love letter to the Art Deco era, with dark wood, plush leather, and dim lighting that whispers secrets from the past. It’s a place where you can lose yourself, whether you’re with a crowd or drinking solo at the bar.

Mexican-Japanese Fusion

What truly sets Valedor apart is its unique fusion of Mexican and Japanese influences. This cultural blend is evident in their food and drinks.  With drinks like the Tokiol’Fashioned, Sakerita and dishes like Al Pastor Gyoza and Birriayaki among others. While what they do they do and get right, I would encourage to experiment with new recipes and bring more fusion drinks to the menu.

Cocktails

Tokiol’Fashioned

Leading the pack is the “Tokiol’Fashioned,” a remarkable twist on the classic Old Fashioned. This cocktail features Japanese whisky, Lapsang-kokuto Syrup, and house bitters, offering a harmonious blend of sweet and smoky flavors that dance on the palate.

Sakerita

A nod to Mexican heritage with a Japanese twist, the “Sakerita” combines either Cucumber or Passion Fruit or Strawberry with Sake, Lychee liqueur, Yuzu and Lychee Foam. To my taste it was light and refreshing.

Food

But a good drink deserves good food, and this is where Valedor shines. The small plates menu isn’t just a sideshow; they are the headliners. Think gourmet – New York Strip Katsu Sando, a delicious blend of black garlic katsu sauce NY Strip sandwiched in Milk Bread. Some of the must try also include the Cilantro Lime Crispy Rice and Al Pastor Gyoza.

The Verdict

Valedor isn’t just another cocktail bar. It’s sophisticated without being snobbish, welcoming without being mundane. If you’re in the Chicago Wicker Park area and you’re not stopping by Valedor, you’re missing out on a piece of what makes this city bar scene great.
